OPHIR PASS-BROWNS GULCH

 

Ophir Pass on forest service road 679 is located in the san juan national forest north of the town of silverton. It effectively connects highway 550 to highway 145 just south of telluride. it is a 9.8 point to point road with an elevation of 9,298 to 11,814 at the pass.  Browns gulch Road, Forest Service Road #825, starts off near Red Mountain Pass and heads up US basin where the road climbs high above timberline to 12,000' for amazing views down into the historic Chattanooga area and highway 550. the road finishes off by switchbacking down into browns gulch where you pass through the Brooklyn mine area. snow can linger on both roads into the summer months and the photos shown were taken on june 17, 2016.
